Wat Bang Phra – Sak Yant Tattoos Temple in Nakhon Pathom

Wat Bang Phra (วัดบางพระ) is a unconventional Buddhist temple famous for the daily tattoos given by monks. This wat is situated about 50 km from Bangkok in Nakhon Pathom Province. It is the most popular place in Thailand to get a genuine, traditional and artistic Sakyant tattoo from a Buddhist monk.

Buddhism and tattoos

As mentioned above, Wat Bang Phra is known for the daily tattoos (Sak Yants), and especially for the Sak Yant Tattoo festival held in the temple during March.

The Sak Yant tattoos are done manually by monks, and visitors can choose among a large number of tattoos available on the temple’s wall. It’s said that the ink used for tattooing contains snake venom mixed with other ingredients. When the tattoo is completed, the monk blesses the tattoo.

Sak Yant tattooing has been practiced for almost 2000 years.

There are no complaints about the safety on tattoos done at this temple.
