Si Satchanalai Historical Park is a historical park in Si Satchanalai district, Sukhothai, and located on the bank of the Yom River approximately 550 kilometers from Bangkok. Si Satchanalai was part of the Sukhothai Kingdom that existed from 1238 until 1438.
Sukhothai Kingdom legacy
The park was officially opened on December 12, 1991 and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Si Satchanalai Historical Park comprises a number of ruined temples, Buddhist statues and other fascinating monuments:
Wat Chang Lom is one of the main temples. The most important historic building at this temple is the chedi.
Wat Nang Phaya or the temple of the Queen is a remarkable temple with an almost intact chedi. Wat Nang Phaya is also the name of a temple situated in Phitsanulok.
Wat Khao Suwan Khiri or hilltop temple is a beautiful and single bell-shaped chedi built on the top level of a tiered base.
Wat Khao Phanom Phloeng is another hilltop temple within the ancient complex of Si Satchanalai. This temple hosts a splendid Buddha statue and it’s partially covered by trees.
The impressive Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Chaliang is one of the major ruins in the park. Locals call this temple Wat Phra Prang, Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat or Wat Phra Borommathat Mueang Chaliang.
Wat Chedi Chet Thaew is a huge chedi with lotus bud shaped top inside a large compound containing 7 rows of chedis featuring a total of 33 subordinate chedis. The temple contains the ashes of royal members of the Sukhothai dynasty.
Si Satchanalai Historical Park is open daily between 8.30 AM – 4.30 PM Admission fee is 40 THB.
