The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) is working on a campaign called “One Night, One Dollar” in order to help draw travellers back to the popular tourist island, the Asian country’s quintessential tourist destination that will reopen to foreign visitors as of July 1.

Phuket establishments adhering to the plan would offer rooms that are usually sold between 1,000 baht (US$32) and 3,000 baht ($96) per night at the cost of one dollar. The difference between the two prices would be paid by the government, reports TTG Asia.

The measure has yet to be approved by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, but the agency is already working on it. “The TCT has also raised the idea with major wholesalers and online travel agents and they are ready to help,” said Chamnan Srisawat, president of the tourism promotion body.

If the Phuket campaign is successful, it could expand to other destinations such as Koh Samui, Pattaya and Bangkok, whose opening is coming soon.
