French National Arrested for Operating Illegal Koh Phangan Resort

KOH PHANGAN – Police have arrested a French man and four Myanmar nationals in a crackdown on an unlicensed resort operation on the tourist island of Koh Phangan in Surat Thani province. The action is part of ongoing efforts to regulate illegal foreign-run businesses on the popular destination.

French Nationals Accused of Operating Illegal Villa Hotels on Koh Phangan

The unregistered resort, which featured 11 rental units along with restaurant and fitness services charging between 2,000 and 4,000 baht per night, was discovered during a joint inspection by immigration and provincial police alongside local officials. The French operator, identified as 32-year-old Arnaud, could not present a valid hotel business license when confronted by authorities.

Further investigation revealed that four Myanmar nationals were employed at the resort without proper work authorization and were performing duties outside legally permitted categories, violating Thailand’s labor regulations. Arnaud now faces multiple charges, including operating a hotel business without permission, working outside allowed foreign employment categories, unlawfully employing foreign workers, and failing to report their employment within the mandatory 15-day period. The Myanmar workers were charged with failing to notify authorities of their employment and working beyond their permitted roles.

Lieutenant General Phanumart Boonyalak underscored that the operation aims to bolster tourist confidence and protect Koh Phangan’s reputation. He urged residents to report similar violations to the immigration hotline 1178 or the Surat Thani immigration office. The enforcement reflects a broader initiative to ensure compliance with local laws and maintain the island’s appeal as a global tourist destination.
