Thailand prepares for a stormy Songkran: Thunderstorms, hail and scorching heat nationwide
Bangkok — Thailand’s traditional New Year celebrations are set to be disrupted by extreme weather as meteorologists warn of a mix of summer storms, hail, and blistering heat across different regions during the April 13-17 holiday period.
Thailand Braces for Heat and Thunderstorms Across the North and Northeast from March 13th–18th
The Meteorological Department revealed that competing weather systems will create volatile conditions, with a high-pressure front from China colliding with humid easterly winds to produce severe thunderstorms across northern and northeastern provinces. Chiang Mai and surrounding areas could see destructive hailstorms and strong wind gusts on Sunday and Monday.
“This isn’t typical Songkran weather,” cautioned senior meteorologist Dr. Somchai Baimuang. “We’re monitoring potential supercell development in the North that may spawn tornado-like conditions, especially in mountainous areas.”

As the high-pressure system weakens mid-week, the focus shifts to dangerous heat with temperatures in Bangkok and central regions expected to feel like 42°C due to urban heat island effects. Health officials have issued ozone pollution alerts for vulnerable groups as the mercury rises.
Meanwhile, southern tourist hotspots face a different threat as monsoon rains are predicted to dump over 200mm of rainfall across Phuket, Krabi and Surat Thani. Flood response teams are being mobilized in low-lying areas, while marine warnings have been posted for strong rip currents that could endanger beachgoers.
In preparation, Bangkok authorities are setting up 500 cooling stations while Chiang Mai officials distribute hail-resistant covers to protect vehicles and crops. The Climate Change Commission warns this turbulent weather pattern reflects Thailand’s new normal of intense seasonal transitions.
Poll Shows Strong Songkran Travel Plans Despite Concerns
Travelers are urged to monitor real-time alerts through the Thailand Disaster Warning app and exercise caution during outdoor celebrations. As millions crisscross the country for family reunions, this year’s Songkran may be remembered more for its weather extremes than its water fights.
