The statue of Thao Suranaree (or Thao Suranari), also known as Ya Mo, stands in the centre of Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat city), and is a popular object of devotion, while a festival in her honor is held in the city at the end of March and the beginning of April each year.
The statue of Thao Suranaree, Korat city’s most significant sight, is situated in front of the Chumpon Gate on the west side of the city. This bronze monument was erected in 1934 to commemorate the heroic deed of Khun Ying Mo, wife of the Deputy Governor of Korat during the reign of King Rama III, who inspired the defenders of the city to resist an invasion in 1826. Every year from March 23 to April 3, there is an honor celebration that can attract thousands of people from towns and neighboring provinces. Cultural displays, exhibitions and fireworks are the highlight plus plenty of local entertainment and folk singing around the monument.
