A shoot-out yesterday in the southern border province of Narathiwat left three suspected insurgents and two policemen dead, including a police major.

The gunfight, which lasted about four hours, broke out in the afternoon after policemen laid siege to a house in Narathiwat’s Rusoh district. The property was believed to be a hideout for an unknown number of heavily-armed insurgents, police said.
