BANGKOK, 9 February 2012 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health is allotting 60 million baht to buy 60 million condoms in its campaign to promote safe sex and prevent unwanted pregnancy on Valentine’s Day.
Public Health Minister Mr. Wittaya Buranasiri said the free distribution of condoms would reassure that teenagers and young adults, who are sexually active, practice safe sex.
He cited the move was also inspired by a public survey that revealed only 43% of young people in Bangkok used condoms, and that 1 in every 3 of them had multiple partners.
Mr. Wittaya said their sexual behaviors contributed to a growing number of STDs patients in Thailand. The number of young people aged between 15-19 contracting STDs rose from 17.33% in 2005 to 19.31% in 2010.
Also within the five-year period, people with gonorrhea rose from 22.3 cases per 100,000 people to 42.2. Following these statistics, the Ministry of Public Health decided to distribute free condoms to prevent more patients.
