Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra orders faster disaster warnings

BANGKOK, 4 January 2012 (NNT) – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has instructed government agencies to warn the public of disasters faster by using all available channels of communication, following the current flooding in the South.

According to the Prime Minister, the government has been monitoring the situation in the South since 25 December 2011 given the rising sea level. The premier said she was equally concerned for all flood-hit provinces and that she was ready to travel down south if the situation got out of control.

Upon the prime minister’s orders, the Ministry of Interior will spend emergency budgets of all provincial governors to tackle the flooding situation while the Flood Relief Operation Center will help the flood victims. The military will provide assistance and support for related government units.

Science Minister Plodprasob Suraswadi, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Preecha Rengsomboon, and Deputy Public Health Minister Torpong Chaiyasarn will visit flooded provinces in the South to follow up on flood relief operations.
