Golf course in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand

BANGKOK, 27 August 2011 (NNT)-The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has led tourism operators and press members from East Asia nations to meet tourism operators in Chiang Mai in the hope to increase the popularity of golf tourism in the North.

According to TAT, travelers in golf tourism have buying power twice as much compared to regular travelers. Participants from China, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan are attending this event which is held at Le Meridian Hotel.

People from this region are Thailand’s major clients in golf tourism and there is a chance for it to grow in the country particularly in the North which has golf courses of world standards. The topography is also a great addition to the business. The North itself also has many tourism areas where travelers can find restaurants, natural parks, resorts and hotels as well as spa with Lanna theme.

There are 16 million tourists each year who come from East Asian nations. Chiang Mai TAT Director Mr. Chalermsak Suranand said Chiang Mai has the potential to become a destination for golf tourism as there are 98 direct flights each week from 8 countries to the province. It is also a hub for medical tourism and hotels that are of world standards as well as a wealth of cultural and local traditions.

Over 3,000 Japanese tourists have chosen to stay in Chiang Mai on a long term basis. Indian couples come here to hold their wedding ceremonies and a golf festival is scheduled every May and June each year.
