Red Shirt core leader pleads guilty of lese majeste

BANGKOK, 4 August 2011 (NNT) – Core leader of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) Yosawarit Chuklom has confessed to committing lèse majesté and has been scheduled for a court hearing on 29 August.

On Wednesday, the Ratchada Criminal Court summoned witnesses on the plaintiff’s side for questioning in the lèse majesté case lodged by the prosecutor against Mr Yosawarit, aka Jeng Dokjik. The defendant is alleged of breaching Section 112 of the Criminal Code by making slanderous and insulting remarks against the monarchy on the UDD stage at Phan Fa Bridge on 29 March 2010.

Based on the charge, the Court indicated that Mr Yosawarit’s statements were inappropriate and reflected his intention to tarnish the image of the revered institution. The defendant then admitted that he was guilty as charged.

The UDD core figure was therefore ordered by the Court to draw up a plea of guilty for submission within 15 days. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for 29 August.
