Thailand to give out free condoms to cut HIV/AIDS infections
BANGKOK, 31 March 2011 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health has launched ‘condom points’ to provide condoms and lubricants for people, especially homosexual groups, free of charge in an effort to cut HIV/AIDS infection rate in the country.
Speaking in a national HIV/AIDS seminar this week, Permanent Secretary for Public Health Medical Doctor Paijit Warachit admitted that the HIV/AIDS infection risk is increasing in Thailand, especially among homosexuals.
According to the permanent secretary, about 10,850 new HIV/AIDS patients are recently found. Of that number, 33% are homosexuals and 3% teenagers. The rising infection rate is due to difficulties in accessing information on HIV/AIDS prevention as well as condom service.
