Suvarnabhumi Airport: a bad experience for travellers

Bangkok’s ‘showpiece’ airport is still beset by ongoing problems, from long queues to taxi scams to overpriced food. Will it ever change?

It was supposed to be the nation’s pride and joy, a grand first impression for foreign visitors. But ever since Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport came into existence, it has been plagued with problems.

First, there weren’t enough toilets. Then came reports about cracked runways. Later it was occupied for weeks by anti-government yellow-shirt demonstrators – a move that brought regional transportation to its knees.

  1. They need to have a bit more common sense. When I flew back from there last November, The staff manning the check in desks stuck notices up (The monitors which show “Economy”, “First” etc. were out of order, but that wasn’t the issue), above the check-in desks, denoting which desk was for which class of travel. After long queues had built up at each desk & just before starting to check-in, they decided to switch all the notices around! I have absolutely no idea why they did this, but the ensuing pandemonium had to be seen to be believed! Totally incompetent!
