Schools at Thai-Cambodian border ordered closed

BANGKOK, 9 February 2011 (NNT) – The Ministry of Education has ordered a closure of schools and other educational institutes along the Thai-Cambodian border in the wake of the border battles for safety of students and teachers.

Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat announced that 62 schools and three other non-formal education centers have been ordered closed following the safety and security measures in risky areas. He said school directors can halt teaching activities immediately depending on the situation.

The Minister stressed that after the situation returns to normal, the schools must conduct extra classes to make up with the closure. He added that schools must also coordinate closely with security officers at both district and provincial levels in order to update the situation.
