Thai National Disaster Warning Center tells people not to panic about tsunami rumor

BANGKOK, 22 December 2010 (NNT) – The National Disaster Warning Center has reassured the public that the center follows the international standard warning procedures and that they shall be warned ahead of natural disasters.

Group Captain Somsak Kowsuwan, Director of the National Disaster Warning Center, vowed that even though movements of the earth’s surface cannot be forecast ahead of time, with evacuation drills in place, lives of people will be saved.

Following the 2004 tsunami and rumors of another one to occur this month, the Center has been working closely with many agencies, such as the Meteorological Department, the Hydrographic Department and the Department of Mineral Resources, in exchanging information concerning natural disasters and developing evacuation plans.
