BANGKOK, Nov 24 – His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej will go by boat Wednesday evening, his first such journey in four years, to preside over the opening of the Bhumibol 1 and Bhumibol 2 Bridges and a sluice gate of Klong Lad Pho, a shortcut canal in Samut Prakan, part of the royal initiative project for Bangkok flood prevention.

It is the monarch’s first boat trip in four years. His previous waterborne visit was to make merit at the Temple of Dawn on June 6, 2006, the 60th anniversary of his coronation in 1946.

His Majesty the King and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will embark on the royal barge Angsana from Siriraj pier at 4.30pm en route to Klong Lad Pho in Samut Prakan’s Phra Pradaeng district.

  1. Along with hundreds of children waving flags and bands playing, plus moks all seated in attendance, poles adorned with flowers and ribbons and bunting, we waited for the King and his party to pass by. What a let down!! His large boat (not a royal barge at all) flew past at speed, leaving us all wondering whether the King was on the front of the speeding large launch, or whether he was in the lounge enjoying a drink!! No slow down past the Grand Palace or the Temple of the Dawn opposite, despite huge numbers of flagwaving children and loyal subjects. Very disappointing…as we had waited for 2 hours, with the River virtually shut down to traffic.
