Thais celebrate Queen’s birthday as govt investigates monarchy threat

BANGKOK: Thais Thursday celebrate the 78th birthday of Queen Sirikit, which is also Mother’s Day in the Kingdom.

The occasion is being marked even as the Abhisit government says there have been serious threats recently to overthrow the monarchy.

Recently a special task force of over 300 officers was formed to investigate what the government is calling a plot to overthrow the monarchy.

This runs contrary to the generally accepted position that royal family is universally revered.

According to the Department of Special Investigation, Thailand’s equivalent of the FBI, the current conspiracy has three main elements: the leadership, operatives and the masses.
