Thai soldier killed in Red Shirt clashes

A Thai soldier has been killed after being shot in the head during clashes between government troops and Red Shirt protesters on the outskirts of Bangkok.

At least five people have already been injured in the clashes.

The conflict started earlier today when Red Shirts began moving around the city recruiting supporters.

About 2,000 protesters left their fortified CBD rally site in trucks and utes at lunchtime, saying they would break through checkpoints if the military refused to let them pass.

Troops reportedly fired rubber bullets when the convoy refused to stop.
