Thai forces, protesters clash in Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) — A “massive firefight” broke out between Thai security forces and crowds of anti-government protesters Wednesday, as tensions flared in the latest round of confrontations between the two groups just outside the capital, Bangkok.

The fighting broke out after riot police and government troops massed along a major highway to stop the progress of an anti-government convoy. Each group had been attempting to restrict the flow of the other.

Security forces and riot police were trying to disperse protesters, while the demonstrators stood in the way of troop reinforcements.

“This is a very tense and intense standoff,” CNN’s Arwa Damon reported. “There is row upon row of riot police.”
