Fate of 2,000 Rohingya people in Thailand uncertain

PHUKET, May 1 – Detention centres in several provinces in Thailand are overcrowded with nearly 2,000 Rohingya ethnic migrants who fled Myanmar in wooden boats across the Andaman Sea to the kingdom, a senior police officer said.

Pol Lt Gen Panu Kerdlarppol, Immigration Police commander, said the 1,936 Rohingya migrants are detained separately in several provinces including Ranong in the South, Bungkarn, Mukdaharn and Ubon Ratchathani, awaiting return to their country of origin.
