An army officer who commanded soldiers during the “krachab puenti” (seizing back the area) operation against red-shirt protesters on April 10, 2010, says he regrets the loss of lives but his men were overwhelmed by numbers and attacked by unknown assailants using guns and explosives.
Col Thammanoon Withee, head of the 1st Army Command’s Operations Unit, recalled the bloody clash in testimony to the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s fact-finding sub-committee hearing on Tuesday.
It was the first time any army officer had spoken at the inquiry during a public session about the controversial crackdown against the anti-government protesters.
He said his troops could not accomplish the mission they were assigned by their superiors on that day, to re-open to traffic connecting roads on Ratchadamnoen Avenue.
