Protesters turn on the media

BANGKOK: The media have become a new target in Thailand’s political turmoil.

Since their protest was crushed by troops, furious demonstrators have turned their anger on the most visible messengers in their conflict.

Largely drawn from the rural poor of north and north-eastern Thailand, the Red Shirts resent what they regard as the Bangkok-centric Thai media, which they believe openly support the government and the Bangkok elite.

In the aftermath of their protest collapsing, the protesters have also turned hostile towards the international media, previously regarded as friendly and as their best avenue for spreading their message to the world.
