New Scam Center Discovered in Cambodia Following Thai Border Crackdown

BANGKOK – Cambodian authorities, in coordination with Thai officials, have uncovered a new transnational scam compound in Malai city, Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia. The center is believed to have relocated there after increased law enforcement pressure along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Pol Lt Gen Jirabhob Bhuridej, deputy commissioner of Thailand’s Anti-Cyber Scam Centre (ACSC) and assistant national police chief, disclosed on Monday that the facility is located approximately 50 kilometers from Poipet township, which borders Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province. The compound, which remains under partial construction, comprises two-story buildings with separate operational and residential zones near Malai Park.

“Inside, there are workers from various nationalities, including Thais, Indians, and Indonesians, with their supervisors being Chinese nationals,” Pol Lt Gen Jirabhob stated.

The discovery follows intensified collaboration among Thailand, China, and Myanmar to dismantle scam operations along their shared borders. Pol Lt Gen Jirabhob noted that ongoing conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border has driven some criminal networks to seek safer operational bases deeper inside Cambodia.

“The situation shows that the issue of scams is becoming more severe and complex, and no country should be a safe haven for them,” he emphasized. “All countries must cooperate seriously to dismantle these scam networks.”

In the week spanning December 28 to January 3 alone, Thai police recorded 6,369 scam-related cases, with total financial losses exceeding 220 million baht.

Authorities also warned that scammers are increasingly adopting advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to conduct more targeted and convincing fraud schemes. The ACSC stated it is accelerating preventive measures to protect potential victims and disrupt these evolving criminal operations.
