KOH TAO – A 19-year-old Thai-Myanmar national has been apprehended on Koh Tao for the alleged sexual assault of a 22-year-old Canadian tourist in the early hours of November 13th. The suspect was arrested after a swift investigation prompted by the victim’s report to local authorities.
Thai Police Step Up Vigilance After Rape Attempt Of Tourist
According to police, the incident occurred around 1:00 AM as the tourist, identified as Julia, was returning to her accommodation. The suspect allegedly posed as a motorcycle taxi driver before diverting from the main route onto a dark pathway where he attempted to assault her. The victim escaped by jumping from the moving motorcycle and summoning help, though not before the assailant temporarily seized her phone.
Police Arrest Suspect in Attempted Rape and Robbery of Chinese Tourist in Pattaya
Julia received medical treatment for abrasions at Koh Tao Hospital before filing a formal complaint. Police used CCTV footage to identify and track the suspect, locating him hours later hiding near a warehouse parking area. During questioning, the man admitted to the assault and tested positive for methamphetamine use. Authorities have recovered the victim’s phone and the clothing worn during the attack as evidence. The suspect remains in custody as investigators examine potential connections to other offenses.
