Heavy Rain Triggers Widespread Flash Flooding Across Bangkok Metropolis and Pattaya
BNGKOK – Torrential rain on Sunday night caused significant flash flooding across major urban centers, including Bangkok, Samut Prakan, and Pattaya, disrupting traffic and submerging major roadways. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported flood levels ranging from 5 to 20 centimeters in numerous districts, impacting areas from Laksi and Don Muang to Lat Phrao and Khlong Toey.

The intensity of the downpour overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt clarified that while the street sewers are designed to handle up to 60 millimeters of rain, certain areas received nearly double that amount overnight. Laksi district recorded 131.5 millimeters, with Bang Na and Phra Khanong also experiencing extreme rainfall exceeding 115 millimeters. The severity of the flooding necessitated the closure of a flooded underpass in Bang Sue on Monday morning.

The flooding was not confined to the capital. In neighboring Samut Prakan province, key arteries including Sukhumvit and Srinagarindra roads were affected. Pattaya faced even more severe conditions, with waist-deep water reported along Sukhumvit Road from North to South Pattaya, rendering low-lying sections like Pattaya 3 Road impassable for small vehicles.
