Two Insurgents Killed in Songkhla Clashes Amid Southern Violence

SONGKHLA — Two suspected insurgents were shot dead by security forces in a fierce firefight in the mountains of Sabayoi district on Friday morning, as ongoing violence continues to grip Thailand’s deep south. The clash occurred near the border with Pattani province, where militants attempted to flee after breaking through a military siege.

Clashes Erupt in Southern Thailand as Security Forces Besiege Suspected Insurgents

According to security sources, a group of 5 to 7 insurgents escaped a three-day operation in Ban Huai Tao village, where they had been cornered by authorities. Blood trails found near a rubber plantation hideout indicated several had been injured in earlier exchanges. The militants reportedly fled uphill toward Pattani, prompting a coordinated pursuit involving paramilitary rangers and Pattani-based units.

At dawn, rangers intercepted the group, resulting in a gunfight that left two insurgents dead. In a separate incident overnight, suspected insurgents set fire to a backhoe belonging to a road construction company in Panareh district, Pattani. No casualties were reported in the arson attack.

The operations highlight persistent security challenges in the Malay-majority southern provinces, where a decades-long insurgency has claimed thousands of lives. Authorities remain on high alert, with reinforcements deployed to intercept remaining militants and prevent further attacks on infrastructure and civilians.
