Attack on Security Forces
The bomb detonated around 8 a.m. in Ban Jue Rae village, Sungai Padi district, as officers escorted local teachers—a frequent target in Thailand’s restive southern border region. The blast injured two police sergeants, Masaki Mamu and Jira Julani, along with civilian Marodee Samae, all of whom suffered shrapnel wounds. Four additional officers reported minor injuries, including chest pain and hearing damage from the concussive force.
Ongoing Insurgency Threat
Authorities attributed the attack to ethnic-Malay separatist groups active in Thailand’s Deep South, where a decades-long conflict has claimed over 7,000 lives since 2004. The region, encompassing Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala provinces, regularly sees bombings and shootings targeting security forces and civilians.
