Triple Bombing at Pattani Red Cross Charity Fair Wounds Seven in Southern Thailand

A coordinated bomb attack struck the Pattani Red Cross Fair before dawn Friday, injuring seven people in the latest violence to roil Thailand’s restive southern provinces. The blasts marked the second major security incident in the region this month, raising fears of escalating insurgent activity.

Two bombs rock downtown Pattani, third defused

The first explosion ripped through an unmanned guard post at the Tourism and Sports Office at 4:44 AM, shattering the predawn quiet near Suan Somdet Road. Two subsequent detonations followed at 5:19 AM and 5:30 AM approximately 400 meters away, targeting lamp posts near the fair’s entrance. The force of the blasts toppled infrastructure and damaged nearby vendor stalls where merchants had been sleeping overnight.

Among the wounded were five local vendors and two police officers, all transported to Pattani Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The annual charity event, which opened June 12 and runs through June 23, had been closed to the public at the time of the attack.

Security forces cordoned off the area as explosive disposal teams combed the scene for evidence. Preliminary findings suggest a cell of 5-10 attackers infiltrated the fairgrounds after closing time. CCTV review indicates one group scaled perimeter fencing to plant a timed IED in the guard post, while accomplices rigged explosives inside street lamps.

Authorities are probing potential links to the June 8 night market bombing in Mueang Pattani, with suspicion falling on southern insurgent groups known for targeting soft civilian targets. The attack’s timing—during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan—has drawn particular condemnation from religious leaders.

In a separate incident Friday morning, another explosion rocked Narathiwat province near a police outpost, critically injuring three officers. One member of Task Force 9322 suffered traumatic amputation of his left leg but remained conscious during emergency transport to Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Hospital.

These attacks underscore persistent security challenges in Thailand’s Deep South, where a decades-long insurgency has claimed over 7,000 lives since 2004. Despite ongoing peace talks between the government and rebel factions, violence continues to disrupt daily life in the predominantly Muslim provinces.
