The confrontation began when a military patrol unit encountered four to five armed men in Ban Huai Tao village, a hotspot in the Muslim-majority deep south. The group, believed to be led by local insurgent commander Usmi, opened fire on troops before retreating into the village. Authorities from Sabayoi district and surrounding areas quickly established a perimeter to contain the suspects.
In a separate incident during the mobilization, an armored vehicle transporting reinforcements fell into a ravine, injuring eight soldiers. All were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
