Similan and Surin Islands in Phang Nga Close for Annual Monsoon Season Recovery
PHANG NGA – Thailand’s renowned marine parks, Mu Ko Similan National Park and Mu Ko Surin National Park, will temporarily close to visitors from May 16th to October 14th, 2025, as part of an annual conservation effort. The five-month shutdown, announced by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, aims to protect fragile marine ecosystems during the Andaman Sea’s monsoon season while ensuring tourist safety.
Surin Islands national park closes early due to weather
According to the acting chief of Mu Ko Similan National Park, the seasonal closure provides critical recovery time for coral reefs and marine wildlife that face increasing pressure from tourism activities. The measure helps maintain ecological balance, allowing damaged coral to regenerate and reducing human disturbances to endangered marine species.

Mu Ko Surin National Park, another biodiversity hotspot, will also observe the same closure period. Both island groups are celebrated for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life, attracting thousands of eco-tourists annually.
The temporary shutdown aligns with Thailand’s long-term marine conservation strategy, ensuring these natural treasures remain sustainable for future generations. Authorities confirmed the parks will reopen in mid-October 2025, just in time for the next high season, when visitors can once again enjoy world-class snorkeling, diving, and beach exploration in these pristine island paradises.

Tour operators and travelers have been advised to plan accordingly, as all park facilities, including accommodations and dive sites, will remain inaccessible during the closure period.
