BANGKOK – Brigitte Bardot, the iconic French actress, singer, and erotic symbol of the 1950s and 1960s, has died at the age of 91. The news was announced this Sunday by the foundation that bears her name on social media.

The star of films such as And God Created Woman (1956), The Truth (1960), and Contempt (1963), Bardot was one of the last great living legends of French cinema, following the death of Alain Delon in 2024 at the age of 88.

The French news agency AFP reported that she passed away at her residence, La Madrague, in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera. The cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.

Alongside her short but meteoric film career, Brigitte Bardot—widely known by her initials “BB”—also enjoyed a successful and longer-lasting musical career. She is famously remembered for the single Je t’aime… moi non plus, originally recorded in 1967 with Jane Birkin and her former lover, the enfant terrible of French song, Serge Gainsbourg. The track, featuring Bardot’s sensual moans, continues to stir emotions decades later.

After retiring from cinema, the celebrated actress began a second life as an activist dedicated to animal protection. Her photographs from Canada in the 1970s, denouncing the seal hunt, remain iconic.

In recent years, Bardot had been living reclusively at her two properties in the resort town of Saint-Tropez, facing serious difficulty walking and staying out of the public eye.

Political reactions were swift. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Bardot embodied “a life of freedom” that brought “universal brilliance to France.”
