Floodwall Collapse Inundates Ang Thong Communities, Forces Evacuations
ANG THONG – A sudden collapse of a floodwall in Ang Thong province has triggered widespread flooding, submerging hundreds of homes and prompting the urgent evacuation of vulnerable residents. The breach occurred in Pong Peng sub-district, allowing water from the swollen Chao Phraya River to surge into a local village.

Soldiers from an artillery battalion in neighboring Lop Buri province were swiftly dispatched to the area following reports of multiple breaches in the protective barrier. The unexpected inundation caused panic among residents, who rushed to move their belongings to higher ground on the roadside. Amnart Klaisit, the Pong Peng sub-district headman, reported that Villages 5 and 6 are now under approximately two meters of water.

The incident in Pong Peng is part of a broader regional crisis. Currently, more than 2,600 households across Ang Thong’s Muang, Pa Moke, Wiset Chaicharn, and Chaiyo districts are also submerged. The flooding has been exacerbated by the Royal Irrigation Department’s decision to increase the water discharge rate through the Chao Phraya Dam to 2,700 cubic meters per second.

This increased discharge has also impacted neighboring provinces. In Chainat’s Sappaya district, local officials attributed the collapse of several floodwall sections to the heightened water flow, marking the third flooding incident this year for approximately 2,000 affected households. Meanwhile, in Ayutthaya province, the water level in the canal surrounding Ko Muang rose dramatically by 30-40 centimeters in a single night, demonstrating the widespread effect of the water management measures.
