Insurgents Launch Coordinated Attacks in Southern Thailand

NARATHIWAT/YALA — Insurgents in Thailand’s deep south launched a series of coordinated attacks overnight Sunday into Monday, detonating explosives and setting fire to car tires across five districts in Narathiwat and one in Yala province. The violence, which injured two civilians and damaged property, was timed to mark Malaysia’s National Day and the anniversary of the founding of the separatist Bersatu movement.

The first explosion occurred around 9:50 p.m. on a road in Paruroo sub-district of Su-ngai Kolok district, Narathiwat, slightly injuring two civilians and damaging a vehicle. Six additional incidents followed, including blasts near the Dusongyor mosque and market in Janae district, in front of a Bank of Agriculture branch in Bacho district, and at the Cho-Airong district police station. Shortly after midnight, explosives targeted ATMs in Si Sakhon district and a petrol station in Muang district, Yala. No further injuries were reported, though property damage was widespread.

Authorities linked the attacks to the Bersatu movement, an umbrella organization for separatist groups including the BRN, PULO, and BIPP. Founded on August 31, 1989, by Dr. Wan Kadirt Che Man, a former professor at the International Islamic University of Malaysia, Bersatu has historically used symbolic dates to stage demonstrations and violence. In 2012, the group raised Malaysian flags and anti-government placards in hundreds of locations across the restive region.

Security forces have heightened patrols and launched investigations into the incidents. The southern border provinces have endured decades of insurgency, with periodic surges in violence aimed at undermining Thai sovereignty and highlighting demands for autonomy.

The government condemned the attacks and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring stability through both security measures and ongoing peace dialogues with insurgent factions.
