Strategic Gains Along Contested Frontier
Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, deputy spokesperson for the Thai Armed Forces, confirmed Tuesday that Thai troops now dominate key positions spanning the 800-kilometer border, Thai PBS reported. The secured areas include:
-
The ancient temple complexes of Ta Muen Thom, Ta Kwai, and Don Tual
-
Strategic highlands including Phu Makua and Chong Bok pass
-
Critical border crossings at Chong Chom and Chong Sai Taku
-
The UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear temple precinct
The territorial consolidation comes after artillery duels and aerial strikes between July 24-28 that marked the deadliest border violence since 2011.

Human Toll of the Conflict
The fighting displaced 188,729 Thai civilians, with 15 confirmed civilian fatalities and 53 injured—12 critically. Medical infrastructure suffered severe damage, with 20 border hospitals impacted and 13 forced to close completely. The remaining facilities operate at reduced capacity, straining emergency response capabilities, the Bangkok Post reported.
Ceasefire Holds Amid Tensions
While the midnight July 28 truce remains technically in effect, Tuesday saw both sides exchange accusations of violations. Thailand’s military maintains defensive positions across the newly secured zones, with commanders authorized to determine withdrawal timelines based on threat assessments.
