Pattaya Taxi Driver Reports Foreign Passenger Offering Cannabis as Fare Payment

A Pattaya taxi driver sought police assistance after a foreign passenger attempted to settle his fare with cannabis instead of cash. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, with the driver, 54-year-old Prachuap, filing a report at Muang Pattaya Police Station.

According to Pol Col Chanan Kesornbua, deputy superintendent of investigation, Prachuap stated that he had picked up a foreign passenger at Suvarnabhumi Airport, agreeing on a fare of 2,000 baht for a trip to a Pattaya hotel. The passenger assured him that his wife would cover the payment upon arrival.

However, upon reaching the destination, the passenger handed over only 900 baht in cash. When his wife appeared, she claimed to have just 50 baht. Prachuap insisted on the remaining 1,050 baht, but the couple admitted they had no money and instead offered him a large bag of cannabis.

Refusing the unconventional payment, Prachuap warned them he would report the matter to the police. The couple reacted angrily before retreating into the hotel, leaving the driver unpaid.

Prachuap expressed frustration, noting that while he had previously assisted passengers short on funds, this incident left him hesitant to extend such help in the future. He also remarked that while taxi drivers are often criticized for misconduct toward tourists, this situation was unusual, leaving him with no choice but to seek police intervention.
