Motorbike with suspected explosives destroyed at Phuket airport
Phuket – Phuket International Airport’s bomb squad conducted a controlled destruction of a suspicious motorcycle today after detecting explosive material inside, marking the latest escalation in a series of security threats across southern Thailand. The incident triggered full emergency protocols at one of the country’s busiest tourist gateways.

Airport Director Monchai Tanode confirmed security teams cordoned off a 200-meter perimeter around the abandoned motorcycle, located perilously close to the passenger terminal. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit supported by bomb-sniffing dogs identified the concealed threat after the K9 unit alerted to potential explosives. Initial attempts to disarm the device were abandoned due to fears of a secondary triggering mechanism, prompting technicians to opt for immediate on-site destruction.
The motorcycle’s discovery follows Tuesday’s arrest of two Pattani natives transporting suspected bomb components in Phang Nga. CCTV analysis revealed the suspects had briefly entered Phuket before attempting to return south, with one of two accompanying motorcycles mysteriously remaining on the island. Police traced the abandoned vehicle to the airport, fueling suspicions of a coordinated plot.

Phuket Provincial Police have deployed additional checkpoints and tactical units at transportation hubs following the incidents. “We’re treating this as a failed attack attempt,” stated Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum, noting the suspects’ alleged ignorance about their cargo’s contents suggests sophisticated insurgent logistics.
The airport resumed normal operations within hours, though travelers faced enhanced baggage screenings. The incidents expose persistent security vulnerabilities in Thailand’s tourism heartland, coming just days after similar explosives were neutralized on Patong Beach.
