Bomb squads detonate a suspicious object found on Patong beach in Phuket

Phuket – Bomb disposal teams detonated a suspicious package with timing mechanisms on Patong Beach this morning, marking the second controlled explosion in Phuket within 24 hours and prompting heightened security across the island. The discovery comes amid an ongoing investigation into an alleged explosives network operating in southern Thailand.

Phang Nga Police Arrest Two Men with Explosive Device in Vehicle

Tourists sunbathing near the iconic Patong shoreline were evacuated from a 400-meter radius as Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists disabled the device around 10:30 AM. Witnesses reported hearing two disruptive gunshots—a standard procedure to neutralize potential remote triggers—followed by a thunderous detonation during the controlled disposal. Forensic teams later scoured the scene for evidence, though officials withheld details about the explosive’s composition.

The beach operation follows Tuesday’s discovery of a motorcycle rigged with explosives near Phuket International Airport’s passenger terminal. Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum confirmed both incidents are linked to Sunday’s arrest of two suspects in Phang Nga province, where officers uncovered an improvised explosive device (IED) hidden in a vehicle. Investigators are probing whether the suspects—who entered Phuket on June 23—intended to target tourism infrastructure.

Despite the security scare, Patong’s bustling atmosphere remained largely unaffected beyond the immediate blast zone. Governor Sophon Suwannarat assured visitors that additional checkpoints and bag inspections are being implemented island-wide. “These were preventive successes, not failures,” he stated, referencing the timely neutralization of both devices.

The EOD unit’s rapid response highlights Thailand’s improved counter-terror capabilities since the 2015 Bangkok shrine bombing. However, the twin incidents have reignited concerns about southern insurgent groups potentially targeting economic hubs.
