Explosive Device Neutralized at Phuket’s Surin Beach Amid Security Crackdown
Phuket – Phuket’s bomb squad successfully destroyed a hidden explosive device at Surin Beach early Friday, acting on intelligence from a detained suspect connected to a wider terror plot targeting southern Thailand. The discovery marks the latest in a series of security threats plaguing the island’s tourist areas this week.

The operation was launched after a suspect in custody revealed two devices had been planted near construction sites in Cherng Talay. A multi-agency team comprising Region 8 Police, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists, and local authorities combed the beachfront area with metal detectors before locating the first device buried near public restrooms in a landscaping zone managed by the Department of Public Works.
EOD technicians executed a controlled detonation of the suspicious package—described as an improvised explosive device—at the scene. The successful neutralization came hours after authorities destroyed similar devices at Patong Beach and Phuket International Airport earlier this week. Investigators remain on high alert for a second unrecovered explosive the suspect claims was planted nearby.

Provincial Police Chief Maj. Gen. Sinlert Sukhum confirmed expanded patrols are scanning high-traffic areas across Phuket, with particular attention to infrastructure projects. The Surin Beach device was strategically placed near a tourist-frequented rest area, suggesting intent to maximize civilian impact.

This incident follows Thursday’s arrest of two suspects in Phang Nga province found transporting bomb-making materials, exposing what authorities now believe is a coordinated campaign by southern insurgent groups. Forensic teams are analyzing components to establish connections to previous attacks.
