Koh Phangan Cracks Down on Nude Sunbathing as Tourists Flout Decency Laws

Koh Phangan, Thailand – Police on this idyllic island have launched a major campaign against public nudity after officers discovered groups of foreign tourists sunbathing and swimming completely naked at Zen Beach this week, flouting Thailand’s strict decency laws.

Nudity Crackdown Intensifies

During routine inspections, authorities were stunned to find multiple tourists fully disrobed at the secluded beach, a spot increasingly popular among international visitors seeking tranquility. Many offenders claimed they believed nudity was “tolerated” due to the beach’s bohemian reputation—a dangerous misconception, police warned.

New Measures Implemented

  • Warning signs now dot Zen Beach and nearby Secret Beach, clearly banning nudity in Thai and English.

  • Brochures distributed to resorts, restaurants, and rental homes emphasize that public nudity is illegal and punishable.

  • Businesses put on notice to educate guests or face penalties.

“Thailand welcomes tourists, but nudity violates our laws and cultural norms,” said Koh Phangan Police Chief Lt. Col. Somchai Kowit. “We will not tolerate behavior that disrupts public order.”

Tourists Urged to Respect Local Customs

The crackdown comes amid rising tensions between foreign visitors and local communities over appropriate conduct. Authorities stress that while Koh Phangan is known for its liberal vibe, public nudity remains strictly forbidden.
