Thai PM Anutin Retracts Remarks on Border Dispute with Cambodia
BANGKOK – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has issued a public apology for his recent comments regarding the territorial dispute with Cambodia, attributing the controversy to a “miscommunication.” The remarks, which suggested that people from both nations have encroached on each other’s territory and should relocate, had sparked significant criticism from Thai nationalist groups.
Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Six-Week Heavy Weapon Withdrawal from Border
Upon his return to Thailand last night from the APEC summit in South Korea, the Prime Minister expressed regret over the misunderstanding. He sought to reassure the public that Thailand would not concede any territory in negotiations with Cambodia, specifically mentioning the protection of the Ta Kwai ancient ruins in Si Sa Ket province.
In related developments, Anutin acknowledged Cambodia’s initial withdrawal of heavy weapons from border areas as a welcome gesture. However, he emphasized that any decision regarding the reopening of the border with Cambodia would require careful consideration of public opinion.
Shifting to international economic policy, the Prime Minister clarified that a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on rare-earth elements with the United States represents only a preliminary framework for future cooperation. He stressed that any extraction and processing of critical minerals in Thailand must be conducted in full compliance with national laws.
