Thai PM Anutin: Entertainment Events May Continue with Respect During Mourning Period

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has confirmed that entertainment events, concerts, weddings, and ordination ceremonies may proceed as scheduled during the national mourning period for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother. In his announcement, the Prime Minister emphasized that while such activities are permitted, they must be conducted with appropriate respect and restraint, reflecting the nation’s collective sense of loss.

The clarification comes amid public uncertainty following the passing of the beloved Queen Mother at age 93. Anutin confirmed that the government has not imposed formal bans on entertainment venues, including bars which may operate until their regular closing times. However, he strongly urged operators to avoid excessive celebrations and loud entertainment, calling for discretion and cultural sensitivity during this period.

“Discretion is required,” the Prime Minister stated, noting he would not issue specific regulations governing appropriate conduct. Instead, he expressed confidence in the maturity of business owners and the Thai public, adding “When we experience the loss of a respected elder, we should know what level of responsibility we should exercise.”

Cultural observers noted that Thailand has traditionally maintained flexibility during royal mourning periods, allowing important life ceremonies to continue while expecting subdued tones. Religious ceremonies like weddings and ordinations are considered particularly significant in Thai society and will continue under traditional guidelines that emphasize respectful observance.

No additional government directives regarding entertainment restrictions are anticipated. Authorities are expected to monitor public compliance with these cultural expectations in the coming weeks, relying on voluntary cooperation rather than legal enforcement. The Prime Minister’s approach underscores a balance between maintaining normalcy in daily life and honoring the memory of the late Queen Mother through mutual respect and dignified conduct.
