Tensions Rise with Israeli Tourists and Businesses on Koh Phangan
SURAT THANI – Local authorities and tourism operators on Koh Phangan are expressing growing concern over the conduct of some Israeli visitors and the proliferation of foreign-run businesses on the island. The situation has drawn comparisons to earlier tensions in the northern tourist town of Pai, prompting calls for intervention to prevent escalation.
Thai Police Chief Vows Crackdown on Law-Breaking Israeli Tourists in Pai District
According to reports from Koh Phangan and neighboring Koh Samui, disputes have emerged involving Israeli tourists and business operators. Allegations include the acquisition of land through Thai nominees and the establishment of businesses that cater almost exclusively to Israeli clientele. Some visitors have reportedly caused disturbances that negatively impact other tourists and local enterprises, raising fears of broader conflict within the community.
Surat Thani Governor Teeruth Supawiboonpol convened a meeting with various agencies on Thursday to address these concerns. “We must address these issues promptly to prevent long-term problems and ensure compliance with Thai law,” he stated. The governor acknowledged that enforcement against illegal land ownership and business operations would require time as authorities gather necessary evidence.
The backlash has spread across multiple online posts and articles by influencers and independent media, including a “Save Koh Phangan” page reflecting frustrations that the island is following the path of Pai in Mae Hong Son province. #KohPhangan #SuratThani #thailand… pic.twitter.com/l8ZrwvIHob

Narumol Maisopha, president of the Koh Phangan Hotel and Tourism Association, confirmed that the behavior of some Israeli tourists has created increasing friction on the island. “As representatives of the private sector, we recognize that this harms the image of tourism,” she said, noting that her organization has facilitated discussions among operators and separated conflicting visitors to maintain tourism quality. She emphasized that the province’s tourism growth of over 200% in two years has strained local management capacity, creating an opportunity for provincial and national authorities to intervene before the situation worsens.

Among these, 987 are long-term residents including 349 involved in business operations, while 3,043 are short-term visitors. Local sources indicate that some Israelis operate villas, restaurants, and tour companies primarily serving Israeli tourists, with a Chabad center established for religious and social activities. Provincial labor and immigration offices are investigating potential visa violations as part of the broader response to these emerging challenges.
