Thai Soldier Loses Foot in Landmine Blast Near Cambodian Border
SURIN — A Thai soldier stepped on an anti-personnel landmine near the Ta Kwai temple ruins in Surin province on Wednesday afternoon, becoming the sixth military casualty of landmine explosions since border tensions with Cambodia flared in July.
Thailand Warns Hun Sen to Relocate Cambodians from Disputed Border Zone
The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. near Hill 350, close to the Cambodian border. Private Adisorn Pomklang of the 1st Infantry Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, suffered a traumatic amputation of his right foot and was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Security forces responded swiftly to provide aid and secure the area.
An immediate investigation has been launched to determine the origin of the mine. Thailand has repeatedly accused Cambodia of laying new Russian-made PMN-2 landmines—which were found in “new condition”—on Thai territory, violating international treaties, including the Ottawa Convention, and the bilateral ceasefire agreement signed in Kuala Lumpur.
