Thai Soldier Injured as Cambodian Protesters Dismantle Border Fence in Sa Kaeo
SA KAEO — A Thai soldier was injured and tensions flared at the Ban Nong Chan border area in Sa Kaeo province on Thursday afternoon when Cambodian protesters, including some officials, hurled objects at Thai troops and partially dismantled a barbed wire fence erected by the Thai Army.

The incident occurred as a group of Cambodians gathered behind the fence, which marks territory Thailand insists is its own. The protesters managed to tear down a section of the barrier before Thai reinforcements arrived to secure the area. The injured soldier received immediate medical attention, though the severity of his wounds remains undisclosed.
The Thai Army reiterated that Ban Nong Chan in Kok Soong district is sovereign Thai land, historically used to shelter Cambodian refugees fleeing conflict decades ago. While Thailand allowed many to remain on humanitarian grounds after the war, officials accuse Cambodia of exploiting this goodwill by encouraging permanent settlement to legitimize territorial claims.

The fence was constructed after recent armed clashes between the two nations, which saw Thailand reclaim control of the disputed area. Cambodia has repeatedly demanded its removal and mobilized civilians to protest at the border.
Thai authorities have condemned the violence and called for restraint, emphasizing that the fence serves as a defensive measure against unauthorized incursions. The incident underscores escalating tensions along the border, where diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute have yet to yield a lasting solution.
