Landslide Kills Two in Northern Thailand as Storm Kajiki Triggers Flooding
CHIANG MAI — Two people were killed and a 12-year-old girl remains missing after a devastating landslide struck a village in Mae Chaem district early Wednesday, as heavy rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Kajiki continued to batter northern Thailand.

The landslide occurred around 3 a.m. in Ban Pang Ung, tambon Mae Suek, after persistent downpours loosened soil on steep slopes. At least 10 houses were buried under mud and debris, with seven completely destroyed. Rescue teams recovered two bodies and are searching for the missing child. Multiple injuries were reported, but inaccessible roads and severed communication lines delayed evacuations and medical aid.
Chiang Mai Deputy Governor Chatchawal Panya confirmed widespread disruption, with flooding also reported in Chiang Dao, Hang Dong, and Mae On districts. The province remains under a meteorological warning as the storm system—formerly classified as Typhoon Kajiki—moves across the region.

Sukanyanee Yawinchan, director-general of the Meteorological Department, issued alerts for heavy rain, runoff, and flash floods in 11 northern provinces, including Chiang Rai, Lampang, Nan, and Tak. The disaster highlights vulnerabilities in mountainous regions during monsoon season.
Earlier in Vietnam, Kajiki caused at least seven deaths and severe flooding in Hanoi, damaging thousands of homes. The storm has since weakened but continues to pose threats to Thailand’s northern highlands.
