Thailand Defends Airstrikes as Necessary Response to Cambodia’s Long-Range Missile Deployment

BANGKOK — Thailand’s military has justified its recent deep strike operations as a proportionate response to Cambodia’s deployment of advanced PHL-03 long-range missile systems near the border, escalating tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations, The Nation reported.

Thai Army Accuses Cambodia of ‘Unethical’ Attacks on Laos and Heritage Sites

The Second Army Area first detected the movement of Cambodian PHL-03 rocket systems, capable of striking targets up to 130 kilometers away, prompting immediate concerns over national security. Maj. Gen. Wanchana Sawasdee, Director of the Office for Security Coordination under Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), stated that Cambodia’s actions constituted a direct threat, necessitating Thailand’s defensive airstrikes.

Cambodia’s Missile Deployment Seen as Provocation

Maj. Gen. Wanchana emphasized that Cambodia’s positioning of long-range artillery near the border was an act of intimidation, further aggravated by attacks on Thai civilian infrastructure. “Cambodia has not only concentrated troops along the border but has also deliberately targeted hospitals, schools, and gas stations, resulting in civilian casualties,” he said.

Thai military intelligence reports indicate that Cambodian forces have repeatedly fired rockets into Thai territory, with some strikes landing in populated areas. The use of PHL-03 systems, which can reach deep into Thai territory, has raised alarms among defense analysts, who warn of a potential widening of the conflict.

Thailand’s Airstrikes Deemed Necessary

Responding to accusations from Phnom Penh that Thailand’s air operations were excessive, Maj. Gen. Wanchana defended the strikes as a measured and necessary countermeasure. “Given Cambodia’s escalation, including the use of long-range missiles against civilian areas, Thailand had no choice but to neutralize the threat,” he stated.

The Thai Air Force has conducted precision strikes on suspected missile launch sites and troop concentrations, aiming to degrade Cambodia’s offensive capabilities while minimizing collateral damage. However, Cambodian officials have condemned the operations as unjustified aggression, further straining diplomatic relations.

Regional Stability at Risk

The intensifying conflict has drawn concern from neighboring countries and international observers, with fears that further escalation could destabilize the region. Both nations have accused each other of initiating hostilities, complicating efforts at mediation.

Cambodia Demands Ceasefire as Border Conflict with Thailand Escalates

As the situation remains volatile, Thailand has reinforced its border defenses and called for international scrutiny of Cambodia’s military actions. Meanwhile, Cambodia has yet to respond to Thailand’s latest statements, leaving the prospect of de-escalation uncertain.
