Four More Foreign Nationals Arrested with 110 kg of Cannabis at Samui Airport
In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling, four foreign nationals were arrested at Samui International Airport on Thursday, March 13th, 2025, after authorities discovered 110 kilograms of cannabis buds hidden in their luggage. The suspects, who were attempting to transport the drugs to Europe via Hong Kong, are believed to be linked to a similar bust the previous day, where five foreigners were caught with 144 kilograms of cannabis.

The four suspects were intercepted during a routine X-ray scan at the airport, which revealed the cannabis concealed in seven suitcases. The individuals were identified as:
- S.E.B., 36, British national
- M.S., 23, British national
- P.M.D., 48, Romanian national
- F.M.M., 58, Dutch national
During questioning, the suspects revealed that they had been offered a free trip to Thailand, including meals and accommodation, in exchange for transporting the suitcases. A Thai national reportedly delivered the luggage to their hotel, and the suspects were promised payment upon delivering the bags to their final destination in Germany.
Authorities believe the four suspects are connected to a similar case on Wednesday, March 12th, when five foreigners (four Britons and one Malaysian) were arrested at the same airport with 144 kilograms of cannabis buds destined for Britain and Singapore. The combined seizures over the two days total 254 kilograms of cannabis, with an estimated street value of 45,000 baht per kilogram in Thailand. If sold overseas, the value could soar to 10 times higher.
The four suspects have been charged with:
- Attempting to smuggle cannabis buds without passing customs procedures.
- Violating Thailand’s Traditional Medicine Wisdom Protection Act.
They are currently detained at the Bo Phut Police Station on Koh Samui, while authorities continue their investigation. Police are also working to identify the Thai individual who supplied the suitcases and the masterminds behind the smuggling operation.

This case highlights the growing issue of drug trafficking through Thailand’s airports, particularly involving foreign nationals lured by the promise of free travel and financial rewards. The arrests underscore the need for heightened security measures and stricter enforcement of customs regulations at international airports.
The involvement of multiple nationalities and the sophisticated recruitment of couriers suggest a well-organized international drug smuggling network. Authorities are now focusing on dismantling this network and apprehending those responsible for orchestrating the operation.
Pol Col Denduang, a senior police official, stated that the similarities between the two cases indicate a coordinated effort to transport large quantities of cannabis out of Thailand. He emphasized that police are intensifying efforts to track down the organizers and recruiters behind the smuggling ring.
Customs officials have also pledged to enhance screening procedures at Samui International Airport and other key transit points to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Thai authorities are urging the public, including hotel staff and transportation providers, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. They have also warned foreign tourists against accepting offers that seem too good to be true, as they may be unwittingly drawn into criminal activities.
The investigation is ongoing, with police working to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network. The suspects face severe penalties under Thai law, including lengthy prison sentences and hefty fines. Meanwhile, authorities are collaborating with international agencies to trace the intended destinations of the seized cannabis and identify potential buyers abroad.
