Skin of reserve animal seized at border market in Nong Khai

NONG KHAI, 18TH February 2018 (NNT) – A Lao woman has been arrested for selling the skins of wild animals at a market on the Thai-Lao border in Nong Khai province.

On Sunday, Nong Khai Governor Ronnachai Chitwiset led officers to inspect the market at a temporary border checkpoint in Rattanawapi district to prevent the smuggling of wild animals and rare plants. The officers found a plastic bag containing a dead male palm civet which is a CITES-listed species and a dead shrew-faced squirrel–a fauna reserve animal. The bag had been dumped in a clump of grass before the officers found it.
