Thailand’s Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province may be hosting the World Expo 2020. The fair’s screening committee recently visited the province and was highly impressed.

The site of the fair will be determined later by a majority vote among 160 countries.

The Expo assessment committee was visiting to check whether Thailand meets the criteria in its bid to host the World Expo 2020 fair. Highlights of the cruise included stops to inspect Thai crafts and children playing, as well as being entertained by Thai dancers. A dinner followed that featured a multi-national cuisine.

Hosting the visiting committee was Mr. Vittaya Phewphong, the provincial governor of Phranakorn Sri Ayuddhaya. He welcomed the Expo officials aboard the boat at the port in Phranakorn Sri Ayuddhaya. Assisting him was marketing director Mr. Jiroot Issarangkul Na Ayuddhaya and related officers.

During the cruise, Expo officials sitting in the boat marveled at the beautiful scenery of both sides of Chaophraya river, and getting to see the lifestyles of the local Thai people on the riverbanks.

Their boat stopped in front of Chaiwattanaram temple, Tambon Baanpom, Amphur Phranakorn Sri Ayuddhaya. Mr. Vittaya escorted the visiting officials from the boat to see the handcrafts workshop and Thai dancing, and the playing of Thai children. Thailand’s effort to host the World Expo was in keeping with the philosophy of improving the world by engaging in healthy lifestyles to create a more balanced world to preserve resources, Mr. Vittaya said.

Cruise participants then feasted on a dinner prepared by Phranakorn Sri Ayuddhaya province chefs. The menu featured dishes from more than 10 countries such as France and Portugal, which used to have relationships with Thailand in the Krung Sri Ayuddhaya era.

However, Mr. Vittaya said some people have criticized their efforts to have Thailand host the World Expo, which disappoints him. But Mr. Vittaya confirmed that he had done his duty with the highest intention, and tried to do his best in order that Thailand will pass 14 criteria being considered by the World Expo committee.

Of the criteria, the three most important are: first, the capability and required minimum physical area of setting up the fair that can accommodate the large number of people visiting the fair; second, the lifestyle of people living in the area; and third, the geography of the area to set up the fair.

Mr. Vittaya is 100 percent sure that Thailand can prevail over the other countries competing to host the World Expo 2020, and he didn’t think that politics will affect the assessment. To be selected, the winning site must have at least 70 votes of support from the 160 member countries.

Mr. Vittaya said in June he will fly to France to make a presentation for Thailand in front of assembled representatives.
