Anti-coal Mine Group to Fight On after Leader Killed in Thailand

The anti-coal mine movement in Samut Sakhon Province has pledged to remain firm despite one of its leaders having been assassinated.

The group also pressed authorities to bring those responsible to justice.

The anti-coal mine movement in Samut Sakhon Province held a meeting to determine its next move after one of its leaders, Thongnak Sawekjinda, was assassinated yesterday.

However, the group has pledged to stand firm and demanded police bring those responsible to justice.

Wandee Sawekjinda, Thongnak’s sister, said her brother had no disputes with anyone.

She believes he was murdered because of his involvement with the anti-coal mine movement.

The group claims the mines in the area have been severely damaging the environment.

Prior to the shooting, the group closed down a nearby road to pressure the mine owners to shut down.

As a result, operations have been temporarily suspended.

Local police said they will try their best to arrest the culprits.

Police are questioning witnesses in the area and in nearby provinces and reviewing video footage taken from the CCTV cameras around the scene.
